this is the "cbs morning news" for monday, february 10th, 2014. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well, university of missouri football player michael sam finished an outstanding collegiate career, a first team, all american. he was named the southeast defensive player of the year and now sam could become the first openly gay player of the nfl. he made the revelation in a series of interviews and he told his teammates in august. susan mcginnis in washington. susan, good morning. >> anne-marie, good morning. the nfl has 1,600 players and not one has announce they'd were gay. michael sam announced it. >> i'm not afraid of who i am. >> university of missouri all-american football player michael sam came out sunday. >> i'm an openly proud gay man.

>> if the nfl drafts him as expected he'll become the first openly gay football player. sam told his college teammates last august. >> they took it great, they rallied around me and supported me and i couldn't ask for better teammates. >> missouri coach gary pinkle says sam has taught a lot of people first hand it doesn't matter what your background is or personal orientation, we're all on the same team and we all support each other. >> sports columnist bill rhoden says the nfl players may have something to say. >> there'll be teasing, razzing. hopefully it will be, good natured." he admires his honesty and courage. he's expected to be a mid round pick in this may's draft. no player so far in any of the major sports leagues has come out to be openly gay so far during their careers.

birmingham, the i-20 corridor, an icy mix. monday, tuesday, wednesday, getting into the carolinas. it's got to do with the arctic cold air that's made its way almost to the gulf coast and the low front along the pressure system is going to take the moisture and bring it to the top. never a good scenario in january and february where you have this going on and the winter watches are extended all the way across the deep south because of this scenario. now, as far as snowfall totals, we're looking at maybe 2 to 4 inches of snow across mississippi and alabama and heavier mounts into the carolinas, but not only are they dealing with snow. they're going to deal with ice, maybe enough to bring down power lines. by the way, by the time we get into thursday and friday, these areas will be into the 60s. even warmer weather by the weekend. i'm meteorologist jeff ray for c cs news. >> well, shock on the university

of south florida campus this morni morning. four fra tern brothers were killed in a head-on fiery crash. this is a video of a white suv speeding down the wrong side. moments later it slammed into the car carrying the fraternity brothers. five people were killed, the driver of the suv and the four members of the sigma bay rowe fraternity. >> they meant a lot to us and our chap tur. >> the fraternity is planning a memorial later on this week. now, a warning this morning from the embassy from guyana. they say they received unconfirmed threats on sunday. they're advising citizens not to fly back home on caribbean airlines through wednesday. the airlines say it has increased security but will continue to fly to the u.s. coming up on the "morning news" now, still rocking 50

still does. >> they came on and i felt like i was elevate off the floor. it with us just fantastic. >> reporter: some lucky fans lined up at the ed sullivan theater in new york to watch sund sunday's show. the mop top entertainers made two appearances on "the ed sullivan show." at the time more than 700 people were in the audience. another 73 million viewers watch the beatles steal american hearts on tv. steven green collects thousands of pieces of beatles memorabilia. >> i don't think anybody, any musical band could get this type of attention. >> reporter: times may have changed but beatlemania beats on. >> the beatles basically opened up everything music, culture, the fashion, and so i'm hoping that the young people of today can kind of embrace that.

high of 80. sunny in chicago. snow and ice in dallas and sunny in los angeles. on the "cbs moneywatch," major meat recall and art imitates starbucks? jill wagner is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, jill. >> good morning, anne-marie. asian markets are mixed ahead of fed chair janet yellen's meeting tomorrow. tokyo's nikkei gained more than 1.5%. hong kong's hang seng lost a quarter percent. stocks in this country rose last week in part due to the belief that the fed will post another reduction in its monthly bond buying. the dow jones industrial gained 95 points for the week. the nasdaq composite finished the week nearly 22 points higher. nearly 9 million pounds of meat is being recalled by a north american california company because it processed meat from deceased animals and animals that weren't properly inspected. rancho feeding corporation

shipped the meats to distribution centers and retail stores in california, florida, illinois, and texas. the beef products were processed from january 1st to january 7th. the company has been under scrutiny by the usda. there had been no reports of illness. aol has abandoned an unpopular retirement plan move. ceo tim armstrong was forced to apologize after blaming the cost-cutting move on obamacare and the medical expenses associated with caring for two sick babies of employees. aol had planned to pay company contributions to employees' 401(k) accounts in one lump sum at the end of the year. the company will continue tro matching funds every pay period. "the lego movie" was top at the box office. the toy company sold an estimated $69 million worth of tickets in its debut weekend. "the monuments men" opened in
